Lavender Fields
Layered Lavender Body Bar
$10 per bar, preorder.
The Story
Two layers, one field. Lavender Fields is built on a balanced blend of coconut, tallow, olive, and kokum butter — every soap quality sitting inside its ideal band — then split at the pour: the bottom layer takes on the grey-violet of alkanet root infused in oil, and the top layer carries dried lavender flowers through a golden batter. The scent is true lavender 40/42 and nothing else, clean and herbal-floral, the smell of a field at the end of summer. It is the bar that earns its place on the edge of the tub instead of under it.
The Ritual
Evening shower, warm not hot. Build the lather in the hands or a soft cloth, smooth over skin, and breathe a second longer than usual. Keep the bar on a draining dish so the layers stay crisp to the last sliver.
Meet the Ingredients — Story, History & Science
Beef Tallow (Bovine Lard)
The history: Tallow is the original soap fat, the hard white bar of the old household, rendered from the kitchen and saponified with lye.
Traditional use: The farmstead soap fat, the bar that lasted the winter.
The science: Its fatty-acid profile is close to the skin's own sebum, which makes for a mild, creamy-lathering bar that leaves skin feeling conditioned, not stripped.
Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera)
The history: The everyday fat of the tropics, pressed from the coconut that crossed oceans in every trading canoe.
Traditional use: Island soap fat and hair oil, the lather behind island bathing.
The science: Lauric acid makes the firm, quick-lathering bar: big bubbles, a hard bar that lasts, and a clean rinse.
Olive Oil (Olea Europaea)
The history: The oil that built Castile soap, the mildest bar in the old world, prized for a thousand years.
Traditional use: The Mediterranean's gentle wash, the soap of grandmothers and chemists alike.
The science: High in conditioning oleic acid; it softens the lather into something creamy and kind.
Kokum Butter (Garcinia Indica)
The history: The konkan coast of India presses this butter from the kokum fruit, the hard fat that keeps in tropical heat.
Traditional use: A staple of Ayurvedic skin salves, melted onto dry skin and cracked heels.
The science: High in stearic acid, it firms the bar so it lasts, while melting near skin temperature.
Lavender 40/42 (Lavandula Angustifolia)
The history: Lavender cleaned linens and calmed nerves since Roman laundry day, the flower that made Provence smell like Provence.
Traditional use: The calm herb of the household, stuffed into pillows and dropped into bathwater.
The science: 40/42 is the standardized lavender, balanced to a consistent ratio of linalool and linalyl acetate, the compounds behind the clean, herbal-floral note everyone knows by heart.
Alkanet Root (Alkanna Tinctoria)
The history: The dyer's root of the old world, used since antiquity to coax purple and red from oil.
Traditional use: The apothecary's blush, tinting salves and lip balms a soft violet.
The science: Its alkannin pigments tint the infused oil a grey-violet that carries through cold process: pure color, no dye.
Dried Lavender Flowers (Lavandula Angustifolia)
The history: The harvest itself, scattered through wash-water, linens, and sachets.
Traditional use: The finishing touch on the household's clean things.
The science: Held in the top layer, the flowers read as flecks of the field; they soften slightly as the bar cures, an honest mark of the botanical.
